Injury Insights: Dr. Ramos and Zach Bye Break Down Riley Moss' Rib Injury

When the ribs say “Game Over”

In this edition of Injury Insights, Dr. Joseph Ramos takes a closer look at the injury that forced Denver Broncos defensive back Riley Moss out of a preseason game after taking a shot to the ribs. While Moss’ exact diagnosis had not yet been confirmed, Dr. Ramos explains that several different injuries could cause the immediate pain and protective reaction seen on the field.

From a simple rib contusion to a rib fracture or costochondral separation, the severity can vary significantly, and so can the recovery timeline. Dr. Ramos explains the four most likely possibilities, why a costochondral separation can be particularly troublesome and how long Moss could potentially be sidelined depending on the diagnosis.

Key Insights

  • Rib Roulette: A hit to the ribs can result in anything from a simple contusion to a fracture or cartilage separation.
  • Bruise News: A rib contusion is generally the best-case scenario and may require only one to two weeks of rest.
  • Muscle Matters: An intercostal muscle strain can cause significant pain and may keep an athlete out for roughly three to four weeks.
  • Fracture Fallout: A broken rib typically requires around three to four weeks of recovery before returning to play.
  • Cartilage Chaos: A costochondral separation can be more serious and may sideline an athlete for four to eight weeks.
  • Protection Plan: If Moss suffered a rib contusion, he could potentially return wearing a protective flak jacket.
  • Diagnosis Dictates: Moss’ actual recovery timeline depends on which injury, if any, is ultimately confirmed.
