When a collision involves a commercial vehicle, the stakes are high and the injuries are often severe. What Differentiates Ramos Law

Doctor and Lawyer Leadership
The firm was founded by Dr. Joseph Ramos, MD, JD, a board certified emergency room physician and licensed attorney. That dual background informs the firm’s case strategy, particularly in medically complex injury cases. Medical records, causation analysis, life care planning, and damages evaluation are approached with both clinical and legal precision.

Trial First Strategy
Ramos Law positions itself as litigation focused rather than settlement driven. Insurance carriers recognize firms that are prepared to try cases to verdict. The firm emphasizes courtroom readiness, expert integration, and comprehensive case development to maximize leverage.

Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome. Each case is different and must be evaluated on its own facts.

Why Auto Accidents in Wyoming Are Different

Auto accidents in Wyoming aren’t like crashes in more densely populated states. The state’s vast rural highways stretch for miles with minimal traffic enforcement, which can encourage risky driving behaviors and delay help when something goes wrong. Add in Wyoming’s severe and unpredictable weather (snow-packed roads, black ice, powerful crosswinds and sudden whiteout conditions) and even experienced drivers can find themselves in dangerous situations. Higher speed limits on Wyoming interstates further raise the stakes, turning otherwise survivable crashes into life-altering events when vehicles lose control at highway speeds.

Wyoming also presents hazards that many drivers simply don’t expect. Wildlife collisions are a major cause of serious auto accidents, with deer, elk and moose frequently crossing highways, especially at night and in rural areas. When crashes do occur, long distances between towns can mean extended EMS response times, allowing injuries to worsen before medical care arrives. These unique factors make Wyoming auto accidents more severe and more complex, requiring a personal injury law firm that understands the realities and risks of driving on Wyoming roads.

Types of Wyoming Truck Accidents We Handle

Commercial truck crashes on Wyoming's highways are more complex and dangerous than standard car accidents. These crashes involve federal regulations, multiple liable parties, and catastrophic injuries that change lives forever.

01
Semi-Truck and 18-Wheeler Crashes

Collisions involving semis and 18-wheelers often cause catastrophic injuries due to their sheer size and weight. We dig deep into driver logs, company policies and medical evidence to fully understand how the crash happened and how it has impacted your health and future.

02
Interstate Crashes on I-80 and I-25

Wyoming's long, wind-swept interstates are major commercial corridors. High speeds, winter conditions and heavy freight traffic make crashes on I-80 and I-25 especially dangerous. We understand the unique challenges of interstate trucking cases and how to build strong claims supported by medical insight and detailed investigation.

03
Brake Failure and Runaway Truck Accidents

Mountain grades and harsh weather can push braking systems to their limits. When brake failure leads to a runaway truck accident, we investigate maintenance records, inspection histories and mechanical defects while carefully documenting the full scope of your injuries.

04
Jackknife and Rollover Accidents

High winds across Wyoming's open highways can contribute to jackknife and rollover crashes. These violent accidents often result in multi-vehicle pileups and serious trauma. Our doctor-led approach ensures your injuries are thoroughly understood and properly valued.

05
Underride Collisions

Underride accidents — where a smaller vehicle slides beneath a trailer — frequently cause devastating or fatal injuries. We approach these cases with both compassion and precision, working to hold negligent trucking companies accountable.

06
Wide Turn and Blind Spot Crashes

Large trucks require extra space to maneuver but when drivers fail to check blind spots or misjudge wide turns, smaller vehicles pay the price. We analyze driver training, safety compliance and injury impact to build a clear and compelling case.

07
Overloaded and Improperly Secured Cargo

Improperly loaded cargo can shift, spill or destabilize a trailer especially on Wyoming's rural highways. We examine loading procedures, weight compliance and cargo securement standards to determine who is responsible.

08
Fatigued Driver Accidents

Long-haul routes through Wyoming can tempt drivers to push beyond safe limits. Fatigue slows reaction time and impairs judgment. We review hours-of-service logs and electronic data to uncover violations and connect them directly to the harm you've suffered.

09
Distracted Driving Truck Crashes

Even a moment of distraction behind the wheel of a fully loaded truck can cause catastrophic damage. Whether it involves mobile devices, onboard systems or other in-cab distractions, we investigate thoroughly and document how the crash affected your physical well-being.

10
Defective Truck Parts and Maintenance Failures

Trucking companies are required to properly inspect and maintain their fleets. When tire blowouts, steering failures or other mechanical defects cause a collision, we pursue claims against all responsible parties, including maintenance providers and manufacturers when appropriate.

11
Rear-End Truck Collisions

Because of their weight and stopping distance, trucks that rear-end passenger vehicles can cause severe spinal, brain and internal injuries. Our medical-legal approach ensures these injuries are not minimized or overlooked and that Wyoming families receive the fair treatment they deserve.

Wyoming is a Dangerous State for Truckers

Wyoming consistently ranks among the states with the highest rates of fatal crashes involving large commercial trucks when measured per capita. According to a national analysis based on recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, Wyoming’s fatal truck crash rate per 100,000 residents places it near the top nationally. While larger states may report higher total numbers of truck-related deaths due to population size and freight volume, Wyoming’s smaller population means its fatal crash rate involving large trucks remains disproportionately high. These rankings underscore the serious risks posed by heavy commercial traffic moving across the state’s long, rural corridors such as Interstate 80 and Interstate 25.

What Wyoming Truck Accident Numbers Tell Us

Driving on I-80 through Wyoming comes with unique hazards, especially for those sharing the road with commercial trucks. WYDOT data from 2018 to 2022 shows that semitractor-trailers make up nearly half of all traffic on I-80, accounting for 46% of vehicles. During that period, Wyoming’s stretch of I-80 saw 8,105 crashes, with 50.6% involving commercial vehicles. Of those commercial vehicle crashes, 78% occurred on icy or snowy roads and 54% were directly related to winter weather conditions. Speed was a factor in 35% of these accidents.

The data also highlights the out-of-state nature of much of the traffic: 84.9% of eastbound and 91.3% of westbound vehicles were nonresidents and 90% of commercial vehicle crashes involved drivers from outside Wyoming. This underscores the unique hazards Wyoming’s long, rural highways present, particularly for local residents and travelers alike.

Valentine’s Day Pile-Up Wrecks Wyoming

A fiery multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Green River, Wyoming on February 14, 2025 killed three people and injured 20 others. Federal investigators say the chain-reaction pileup began when a pickup lost control exiting a two-lane tunnel, striking a guardrail. Snow and ice may have contributed, despite clear weather at the time.

The crash involved a mix of passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers. A jackknifed semi and subsequent collisions caused a fire that engulfed several vehicles, trapping one truck driver inside. The Wyoming Highway Patrol estimated 26 vehicles were involved, with eight completely destroyed. Traffic in both directions was rerouted through Green River, and westbound lanes remained closed for several days as investigators cleared the wreckage. Read the story.

18-Year-Old Killed in Crash on Slushy Road North of Cheyenne

An 18-year-old (Wyatt Butler) from Minatare, Nebraska, died in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 85 near milepost 41, north of Cheyenne, on March 12, 2022. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, wet and slushy road conditions, speed, driver inattention and possible cell phone use contributed to the collision.

Wyatt Butler was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene after his vehicle sideswiped a pickup and struck a semi’s trailer. Read the story.

Three Dead in Fiery I-80 Semi Crash East of Cheyenne

A crash on Interstate 80 near milepost 383, east of Cheyenne, claimed three lives on June 17, 2022. Early reports from the Wyoming Highway Patrol indicate that a semi, possibly pushed by strong winds, overturned onto its side and was struck near the rear wheels by a second semi. Both trucks, one empty and one carrying general freight, caught fire immediately.

The Laramie County Coroner is awaiting DNA confirmation, but the victims are believed to be 59-year-old David Poe and 67-year-old Patricia Poe of Texas, and 61-year-old Scott Peat of Pennsylvania. Read the story.
