11-Vehicle Collision Near Empire

  • Date & Time: February 17, 2025, at approximately 10:16 a.m.
  • Location: Westbound I-70 near mile marker 231, Clear Creek County (Empire)
  • Involved Vehicles: 11, including two semitrailers and a Ford F-350 towing a livestock trailer
  • Incident Summary:
    • The Ford F-350 suffered a rupture in its auxiliary fuel tank, leading to a hazardous spill of approximately 80 gallons of diesel fuel.
    • Two individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
    • The driver of the Ford F-350 was cited for careless driving due to excessive speed given the road conditions.
    • No livestock were harmed in the incident.
    • Road Closures: Westbound lanes between Exit 232 (US 40/Empire Junction) and Exit 228 (Georgetown) were closed for over three hours, reopening around 1:47 p.m.

 

Fatal Single-Vehicle Rollover Near Palisade

  • Date & Time: February 17, 2025, shortly before 2 p.m.
  • Location: Westbound I-70 between Cameo and Palisade, approximately 7 miles east of Clifton
  • Involved Vehicle: Kia Sorento with Arizona license plates
  • Incident Summary:
    • The vehicle lost control and rolled over between exits 44 and 42.
    • Six occupants were inside; one female passenger was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
    • Five others sustained injuries and were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment.
    • Road Closures: Westbound lanes were closed at Exit 44, with traffic diverted onto U.S. Highway 6. Eastbound lanes reopened shortly after 1 p.m.
