Injury Insights: Dr. Ramos Breaks Down Marvin Mims’ Ankle Injury

Talk with us today

A boot, a Broncos game and one ankle under investigation

In this edition of Injury Insights, Dr. Joseph Ramos takes a closer look at the ankle injury that sidelined Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims during the preseason finale. Although Mims was reportedly wearing a boot after the game and has not yet returned to full team practices, his ability to do some work on the side field is an encouraging sign.

Dr. Ramos explains the difference between a high ankle sprain, which affects the ligaments between the tibia and fibula, and a more common inversion injury involving the outer ankle ligaments. While a high ankle sprain can be more serious and require a longer recovery, Mims’ sideline activity could point toward a less severe injury. Dr. Ramos believes Mims has a strong chance to return for Monday Night Football, while noting that continued absence could indicate a more significant midfoot or bone injury.

Key Insights

  • Sideline Signal: Mims being able to work out on the side field is an encouraging sign for his recovery.
  • High Ankle Alert: A high ankle sprain involves the ligaments connecting the tibia and fibula and can be more serious than a typical ankle sprain.
  • The Classic Twist: An inversion injury occurs when the ankle twists inward and typically affects the outer ankle ligaments.
  • Recovery Difference: Athletes with less severe ankle sprains may be able to work out and return relatively quickly.
  • Monday Night Question: Dr. Ramos believes Mims could potentially be ready to play against Kansas City on Monday Night Football.
  • If He Doesn’t Return: Continued absence could point to a more significant injury such as a midfoot sprain, plantar fascia tear, Lisfranc injury or metatarsal fracture.
  • Cautious Comeback: The Broncos appear to be taking a cautious approach by limiting Mims while he continues his recovery.
