Revital Supporting the Mental Health, & Resilience of First Responders

In our latest episode of the Difference Makers Podcast, Dr. Jim Hoven talks with Jordan Long, founder and president of Revital, an organization created to support the mental health and safety of first responders. A former firefighter and paramedic himself, Jordan started Revital in 2020 after seeing how few resources were available for those on the front lines. Today, his work combines practical mental health support with outdoor activities across Colorado, helping first responders build trust, find community, and take care of their well-being.

The Mission

Revital’s mission is to get ahead of issues like divorce, suicide, and alcoholism by using recreational outings, such as fly fishing, horseback riding, and woodworking, as avenues to build trust and relationships within the first responder community. These outings are led by current or former first responders who bravely open up and share their stories, which helps break down the “wall” first responders often build between their head and heart.

Jordan emphasizes his faith and desire to help people find purpose and identity outside their jobs. as these were also major factors in founding Revital.

Free Outings and Community Support Resources

Revital provides 18 to 22 free outings per month for first responders and their families, with activities for individuals, couples, and families. Any sworn officer, firefighter, dispatcher, or other first responder, regardless of their years of service, can participate in Revital’s events.

In addition to the outings, they also host retreats that include psycho-education on stress management. Jordan shares a personal story about his own struggles with emotional detachment after a difficult call, highlighting the importance of seeking help before reaching a breaking point. Revital maintains a vetted list of professional resources for counseling, relationship help, and spiritual support that they connect responders to after building trust.

Revital’s Impact

The organization has impacted over 6,000 first responders through its outings and training at over a hundred agencies. Revital’s future goals include expanding within Colorado and potentially starting chapters in other states. A “pre-trip survey” is used to gauge a participant’s well-being, helping the organization track its impact.
