Carie Hallford, former co-owner of Return to Nature Funeral Home, was sentenced on Monday to 18 years in federal prison, three years of supervised release and $1,070,413.74 in restitution. As part of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, Hallford pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud on Aug. 4, 2025. She faced up to 20 years after admitting to conspiracy to commit wire fraud alongside her ex-husband, Jon Hallford, who also took money from families for services never performed.<\/span><\/p>

Hallford asked for leniency, blaming abuse during her marriage. “I was always trying to please a person who was impossible to please,” she said. U.S. District Judge Nina Y. Wang<\/span> said she read about 4,000 text messages between the Hallfords in which she said her ex-husband had berated and belittled her, and she responded by trying to placate him. But Wang said Hallford’s treatment did not excuse her deceit of the funeral home’s grieving customers.<\/span><\/p>

Victims described lasting trauma after learning what happened. Elizabeth Gannon called it “ongoing trauma,” adding, “She chose to take our money and our loved ones’ remains knowing exactly what Jon intended to do with the bodies.” Erin Smelser said, “We should never have to stand here now figuring out how to mourn her all over again.”<\/span><\/p>

Lavish spending called \u201clove-bombing\u201d<\/b><\/p>

Prosecutors argued for a tougher sentence, saying Carie Hallford and Jon Hallford misused pandemic relief funds on luxury purchases\u2014including cars, cryptocurrency and high-end goods\u2014instead of their funeral business, which promoted \u201cgreen burials.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Hallford\u2019s attorney, Robert Charles Melihercik, said her actions were driven by \u201cfear and severe anxiety,\u201d alleging her ex-husband used \u201cclassic instruments of domestic violence,\u201d including threats of harm, to control her. Jon Hallford\u2019s attorneys, Adam Steigerwald and Laura Suelau, declined or did not respond to requests for comment.<\/span><\/p>

Hallford claimed the spending stemmed from \u201clove-bombing\u201d as her ex-husband tried to make amends, and said she wanted the money used to buy a cremator but was too afraid to push the issue.<\/span><\/p>

She still faces 25 to 35 years in state prison on related charges. Both Hallfords have pleaded guilty to nearly 200 counts of corpse abuse, with their state and federal sentences set to run concurrently.
